About Us

Welcome to your cooperative. Unlike most other companies, Kodiak Electric Association, Inc. (KEA) was formed by and is owned entirely by the other members we serve. Our purpose is not to maximize profits for shareholders—we are a not-for-profit organization.

About Us

Historical Development

  • KEA was formed in 1941 to address the growing energy needs of Kodiak, initially taking over from the Community Power Company.
  • The cooperative began operations in August 1942, initially struggling with inadequate power supply and service quality.
  • Significant expansions occurred in the 1940s and 1950s, including the construction of new generating plants and distribution lines to meet increasing demand.
  • By 1964, KEA was providing electricity to the relocated village of Port Lions, further expanding its service area.
  • The 1970s saw the introduction of the Terror Lake Hydroelectric Project, which began operations in 1984, enhancing KEA's capacity and sustainability.

Renewable Energy Initiatives

  • KEA has focused on renewable energy, achieving over 95 percent of its power generation from renewable sources by 2013 and maintaining 98 percent by 2017.
  • The Pillar Mountain Wind Project, initiated in 2009, added significant wind power capacity, complemented by a battery energy storage system to stabilize energy supply.
  • The Upper Hidden Basin Diversion Project, completed in 2019, further increased renewable generation by redirecting high-elevation streams into Terror Lake.

Community Engagement and Services

  • KEA operates under cooperative principles, emphasizing community service and member involvement.
  • The Operation Round Up® Program, launched in 2006, has generated funds for scholarships, totaling nearly $1 million awarded since 1990.

Governance and Future Goals

  • KEA is governed by a nine-member Board of Directors elected by the cooperative members, ensuring local representation and accountability.
  • The cooperative aims to maintain its high percentage of renewable energy while adapting to future community needs, focusing on sustainable practices and technological advancements.
  • KEA's vision emphasizes cost-effective renewable solutions to enhance the quality of life for its members.
